Thank You M.Scott Moon for taking the time to do this piece and for having the patients to find the “right” group of persons to interview even if they all came to you at once.

Hey! Im 15 and I’m really into piercings and tattoos and gauging. My mom only lets me get some ear piercings though and it REALLY irritates me. However, I recently talked her into leting me stretch my lobe piercings to size 12 gauges… I’m not really sure if I should go down each size or if it would be easy to skip a few. The 12s wont go in, so I think I’m gonna get 14s and 16s to make it easy and just work my way up from there. I know I want to get to at least a size 6…I’m pretty sure as long as I’m at home I wont be able to farther, if that. But, yeah!! I’m so excited! I really dont mind the pain, with my past its really nothing hard to handle though (I used to battle depression and cut my self seriously with blades and knifes) so I’m happy my moms letting me do it! My paretns don’t know I used to cut, so the first thing my dad said to me was “You cant handle the pain.” Oh boy daddy are you wrong. I’m excited to see what my school will think of me, because I’m class president and I’m ALWAYS told how I sooooo don’t fit the part, but hey! I’m just being me and who I want to be thats the only mold anyone should try to fit.

Hey all you kids.
It might be cool now to gauge your ears , but it is permanent you know.
I’m not one to judge , because I have tatoos but they were very carefully thought out before I got them and now 20-30 years later I could do without them.
What might be considered hideous to some people , can become beautiful with a shift of attitudes in our culture. However if you have seen ears that have been gauged really big when the hoops are taken out you might have a different opinion about it.
Just take your time and be sure before you alter your body, you might regret it later.

I think gauges look really awsome, but they smell bad, and I just want to stick my finger through the ones that are too big.

iv had gauges for a wile now (prob like a few months) and i think its really really kick ass…my parents dont like it at allthey think i gauged to a 2…but right now i have taped double zeroz=]…and imma gauge to 7/16 soon!!!! i cant wait!!
It is not called “gauging” I have heard kids calling it this lately and it is very irritating. The gauge is the size of the jewelry itself. Stretching is the act of going from smaller size piercing to a larger size by stretching the opening with the new jewelry or a taper.
Stretching (often incorrectly referred to as “gauging”), in the context of body piercing, is the deliberate expansion of a healed fistula (hole in the skin) for the purpose of wearing body piercing jewelry.[1] Ear piercings are the most commonly stretched piercings, with nasal septum piercings, tongue piercings and lip piercings/lip plates following close behind. While all piercings can be stretched to some degree, cartilage piercings are usually more difficult to stretch and more likely to form hypertrophic scars if stretched quickly. Healing is very important in between stages of stretching. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stretching_(body_piercing)

my ears are gauged or stretched at an inch, some people dont like them, but i dont really care, me and alot of my friends have there ears gauged, but mine are the biggest, and i know for a fact, im gonna love them when im older. my ears are starting to blow out a little bit, but my first one happened at size 7/8, so if anyone here is worried about blowouts, dont be just be smart with your stretching.
